I'm currently working on finishing my cascade upgrade. I don't upgrade my hardware that often, about once every 8-10 years. And I am also still one of those types that still prefers a desktop machine. They are easier to selectively upgrade...A new drive here, a new card there, no soldered on memory...
My desktop, I had an i7-6850k with 64GB of RAM. My wife was running an i5-6500 with 16GB of RAM. For the first time in about 8 years, I decided to do a computer upgrade. So I did a "cascade upgrade," replacing hardware with newer or better performing hardware. So I did the following upgrades:
- defiant (my desktop) from i7-6850k/64GB -> Ryzen 5800x/64GB. I also purchased a pair of 1TB NVMe disks to replace the SSDs I had in place.
- valiant (wife's desktop) from i5-6500/16GB -> i7-6850k/64GB.
- luna (zVault NAS) from Pentium G3220/32GB ECC -> i5-6500/32GB ECC.
- intrepid (zVault NAS) from AMD Phenom X4/16GB -> i3-4370/32GB ECC.
Just rebuilt luna's pool, since it was still using GELI encryption. Once that is done, and snapshots, replication, and NFS mounts are updated, I will move the drives from intrepid's old case to the new...
And then back to annoying the bees...
